Setting up House in the Airstream: Episode 3 – Garbage Hack

Inspiration for our Airstream kitchen hack

This hack was born from our desire to have more convenient space for garbage in our Airstream kitchen. At the same time, we didn’t want to give up any of our existing limited storage options. When doing our research before buying our Globetrotter, we read many different approaches to dealing with trash, from storing it outside the trailer (doesn’t work in bear country…) to using space in the shower (our shower is already serving other storage needs).

Cut out the bottom

We also read a number of comments that expressed concern about the utility of the countertop trash bins that were included with the model we went with. Our experience has been that they work fine, we just wish they were bigger. This of course prompted some creative thinking about how to hack a solution.

Big rubberband

The photos show how we cut the bottom out of the standard trash can and used the hole to accommodate a tall kitchen garbage bag. We secure it with a large rubber band and put the can back in its original location.

More space – Double-decker

We use the lower trash can for recycling and the upper one for a larger amount of trash. We are careful not to cram it so full to cause problems when it is time to take the trash out, but that hasn’t seemed to be a problem.

Problem solved

Your mileage may vary, but we have found this to be a great solution.
